Instamart will start owning the stock it sells, so brands that sell through it should expect to deal with a buyer, not a marketplace, within two to three quarters.
Swiggy reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 922 crore for Q2 FY27. That is narrower than Rs 1,092 crore a year earlier but wider than Rs 791 crore in the previous quarter. Revenue from operations rose 36.1% to Rs 7,571 crore. The shares fell about 15% to Rs 179.90 on the BSE on 23 October, wiping out roughly Rs 9,000 crore of market value in one session.
The loss sits in Instamart, the quick commerce arm. Its adjusted EBITDA loss widened to Rs 895 crore from Rs 849 crore a year earlier. Net order value grew 13.4% on the previous quarter to Rs 6,594 crore, orders rose 29.3% on a year earlier to 130 million, and contribution margin was -1.0% of gross order value. Instamart ran 1,240 dark stores across 133 cities.
The change product teams should note: Instamart will move to an inventory-led model and own the stock it sells. The switch starts mid-Q3 FY27 and should take two to three quarters. Swiggy expects about 80 bps better contribution margin and a shorter working-capital cycle. Blinkit made the same move earlier; Eternal reported Blinkit at Rs 184 crore of adjusted EBITDA this quarter with 2,751 stores.

Under an inventory-led model Instamart buys your stock and sells it. That changes who you talk to and how you get paid. Expect purchase orders, fill-rate targets and terms for slow stock instead of a seller dashboard. Brand teams should model the cash tied up in stock Instamart orders, and product teams should build fill-rate and stock reports per city before the switch starts mid-Q3 FY27.
Swiggy says Instamart breaks even at about Rs 30 of contribution per order and expects about two-thirds of the gap to close through higher revenue per order. That means bigger baskets and more ad income, not cheaper delivery. If you sell on the app, test larger packs and bundles and measure average order value per city. If you run a platform, put basket size on the main dashboard next to orders.
Instamart has 1,240 dark stores and a contribution margin of -1.0% of gross order value. A blended figure near zero usually means some stores make money and others lose a lot. Teams building operations tools should report margin per store and per week, so the business can close or fix the stores that drag the total down instead of cutting spend everywhere.
Swiggy posted a Rs 922 crore net loss and Instamart's adjusted EBITDA loss widened to Rs 895 crore. The shares fell about 15% to Rs 179.90 on 23 October.
Instamart will own the stock it sells instead of acting only as a marketplace. The switch starts mid-Q3 FY27, should take two to three quarters, and Swiggy expects about 80 bps better contribution margin.
Swiggy gave a scale, not a date: roughly 2.3X today's size, or annualised net order value of about Rs 60,000 crore against about Rs 26,400 crore now, with about Rs 30 contribution per order.
