We tested 5 UI changes on the onboarding flow: progress bar, clearer button labels, reordered fields, better error messaging, and exit-intent recovery. Combined, they increased completion from 68% to 78%. The progress bar alone was +6%. Each change had measurable impact.
The trading app had 68% onboarding completion. Not terrible, but not great. We decided to audit the UX systematically and test small improvements. No redesign. Just refinements.
What we changed: Added a visual progress indicator at the top of each form screen. "Step 2 of 5" with a bar that fills as users advance.
Why: Users don't know if they're halfway done or 90% done. A progress bar creates a psychological endpoint and signals momentum.
Result: +6% completion lift. Abandonment at the midpoint (step 3) fell by 8 percentage points.
Why it worked: Humans are motivated by visible progress. Even though the form didn't change, the perception of "this will end soon" kept users engaged.
What we changed:
Why: Generic buttons feel like a black hole. Specific labels set expectations and reduce anxiety.
Result: +3% completion lift. Users hesitated less before tapping.
Why it worked: Users want to know what happens when they tap. Specific labels ("Verify Email" vs "Next") create confidence.
What we changed: Moved "Bank Account" field to the end (after identity verification). Before, we asked for it at the start, and users got anxious about sharing banking info.
Why: By the time users reach the bank field, they've already verified their identity and trust the app more. Asking early creates friction.
Result: +4% completion lift. Drop-off at the bank linking step fell by 6 percentage points.
Why it worked: Same field, different position. But psychological context matters. "You've already verified; now link your bank" feels less risky than asking for banking details before proving identity.
What we changed:
Why: Vague errors frustrate users. Specific, helpful errors encourage retries.
Result: +2% completion lift. Error recovery (users retrying after an error) improved by 12 percentage points.
Why it worked: Users who hit an error often give up. A helpful error message ("here's how to fix it") vs a vague one ("something's wrong") changes the psychology.
What we changed: Detected when users tried to exit (back gesture on mobile) and showed a modal: "You're almost done! Just 2 more steps. Want to continue?"
Why: Users who hit "back" haven't necessarily decided to quit. Many are just testing navigation. A gentle nudge can bring them back.
Result: +1% completion lift. Exit-intent recovery captured 12% of the users who would have abandoned.
Why it worked: Low friction. The modal offers a choice. Users who want to leave can still tap back. But those who hesitated now have permission to continue.
Individually:
Some overlap (users won't experience all five changes), so the total was +10%, not +16%. Completion went from 68% to 78%.

This is important: not every "best practice" moves your metrics. Test, measure, keep what works.
Total effort: 3 engineer-days. Return: 150+ additional completed accounts per day (at the client's volume).
You don't need a redesign to move conversions. Small, thoughtful changes compound. Each change removes a tiny bit of friction. Together, they create a noticeably smoother experience. The key: measure each change so you know what worked. This systematic approach beats gut-feel design.
