Arjun & Meera · Today's brief
South Korea's fine against Google and Apple is the story a builder should read first. The regulator fined the two companies a combined 63.7 billion won, roughly $47.6 million, for abusing app store dominance, and ordered that external payment links be allowed inside apps. For anyone building on mobile platforms, that is a signal that the 30 percent toll on in-app payments is no longer a settled assumption in every market. Expect the ripple to reach India's own app store debates, and plan for a future where payment flow and pricing can differ by geography rather than being fixed by the platform.
Around that anchor, today's stories point to where the money and the regulators are moving. In AI, Cognite says it has verified $1 billion in AI value for industrial customers, with about 36 percent of that coming from customers actually using AI at scale. That is a useful reality check for teams selling AI features on promise alone: buyers are starting to ask for measured outcomes, and vendors who can show them will have the stronger pitch. Amazon's launch of five new Alexa devices, including a redesigned Echo Show 16, shows the assistant layer pushing further into the home, which keeps voice and ambient interfaces on the roadmap for consumer product teams.
India's money trail is also worth tracking. Let's Game Now raised Rs 30 crore in a round co-led by Anand Mahindra and Bestvantage Investments, and Zorit, formerly Bijnis, raised nearly Rs 27 crore led by Sparrow Capital to push B2B quick commerce. Both rounds are modest by headline standards but show where early capital is willing to bet: niche gaming infrastructure and the unglamorous business of supplying small retailers. On the regulatory side, Bandhan Bank flagged a potential Rs 200 crore annual income hit if IRDAI's proposed distribution norms land as drafted, and Paytm warned that DLG costs will weigh on near-term EBITDA even as its net payment margin ex-UPI MDR improved to 9 basis points from 8.5. Fintech builders should read the insurance distribution draft as a live compliance and revenue question, not a distant one. Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court let Blink Digital's Rs 1,000 crore suit against Meta proceed in India, a reminder that platform disputes are increasingly being fought in local courts.
What to watch this week: whether app stores in India respond to the Korean ruling with any change to payment policy, and whether IRDAI's distribution draft gets revised after the banking and insurance pushback. Audit your payment flows and your distribution assumptions before either question answers itself.
South Korea on Wednesday (October 28, 2026) fined Google and Apple a combined 63.7 billion won ($47.6 million) for abusing app store dominance. Google must pay 42.9 billion won ($32 million) and Apple 20.8 billion won ($15.5 million). The regulator also ordered both to let local developers use external payment links in apps and to improve app review procedures. It said they charged a 26% commission on third-party payments.
Industrial AI company Cognite reports $1 billion in verified AI value for its customers. About 36% of the value verified to date comes from customers using AI and automated workflows to prevent costly asset shutdowns. Customers also use the tools to get operations running again when the unexpected happens and to lower operating costs across complex industrial operations.
Let's Game Now, an Indian esports and gaming tournament platform, has raised Rs 30 crore in a round co-led by Anand Mahindra and Bestvantage Investments, with a UAE-based family office participating. The fresh funds will accelerate development of the Indian Super Gaming League. Founded in 2018 by Santanu Basu, the company claims reach of over 50 million and a presence in 18 countries.
B2B quick commerce startup Zorit, formerly Bijnis, has raised nearly Rs 27 crore ($2.84 million) in a round led by Sparrow Capital. Existing investors Info Edge and WaterBridge joined, along with Better Capital, angels and employees. Info Edge's stake will rise to 20.12% on a fully converted and diluted basis. Zorit runs 12 dark stores across 12 cities and has reached Rs 120 crore in annualised sales.
Amazon unveiled five new Alexa-powered devices on Wednesday, including a redesigned Echo Show 16 smart display and a photo frame with built-in Alexa. The launch is part of Amazon's push to expand its Alexa lineup. ET Tech reported the unveiling on 29 October 2026.
Fortis Healthcare has acquired Suguna Hospital, a 110-bed facility in Bengaluru, for Rs 277 crore. The deal was done through its subsidiary International Hospital Limited and completed on 28 October 2026. The acquisition expands Fortis's presence in the city and strengthens its network and operational capabilities in Bengaluru.
The Bombay High Court has rejected Meta's jurisdiction challenge in Blink Digital India's Rs 1,000 crore suit, allowing it to proceed in India. Meta had argued its terms require disputes to be heard in California. Justice Sandeep V Marne held that private contracts cannot override mandatory Indian laws. Blink sued after Meta disabled four Business Manager accounts and around 9,000 linked advertising accounts in August.
Bandhan Bank expects a potential Rs 200 crore hit to annual income if IRDAI's proposed distribution norms are implemented in their current form. The bank currently earns around Rs 500–600 crore annually from distributing third-party products. It has made an individual representation to IRDAI seeking a commission structure that reflects distribution costs. It plans to shift insurance focus to Tier-2 to Tier-4 cities and expand mutual fund distribution.
Paytm's net payment margin excluding UPI merchant discount rate improved to 9 basis points from 8.5 basis points. The company credits pricing discipline, EMI offerings, dynamic currency conversion and enterprise acquiring. Deferred loan guarantee costs will still weigh on near-term EBITDA. Paytm also reports a positive outlook for consumer lending and AI investments.
