Scope note

A full spec is long; this is the compact version. Ask for any story to be expanded.

Figures: UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026 (NPCI, via productgrowth.in/numbers). 55.49 crore users onboarded on UPI as of June 2026 (Ministry of Finance, Lok Sabha reply). Our own grounded NPCI data shows 22.7B in June 2026 [3]; I use the September figure you supplied as the latest.

1. Rules that change the stories

  • No extra authentication (AFA) up to ₹15,000 per debit; ₹1 lakh only for insurance, SIPs, card bills. At ₹299 you are far below the limit, so only the first mandate needs UPI PIN [1] (verified 23 Jun 2026).
  • 24-hour pre-debit notification is mandatory, covering UPI AutoPay and NACH [1].
  • Assumption: the notice is sent by the bank/PSP, but you should also send your own reminder; confirm the exact sender duty with your PA (Razorpay/Cashfree/PayU).
  • Assumption: the free trial needs a mandate created at signup with first debit on day 8. Confirm whether your PA supports a ₹0 or low-value validation debit. I have no sourced rule for this. Kriyā's estimate
  • Assumption: retry limits are set by your PSP/bank. The schedule below is a proposal, not a regulation.

2. User stories and acceptance criteria

Set up the mandate As a new user, I want to start a 7-day trial by approving AutoPay once, so that I am not charged until day 8.

  • Given I choose Premium, when I enter my UPI ID, then I see ₹299/month, trial end date, and first charge date. your input
  • Given I approve with UPI PIN, then the mandate is active and trial starts.
  • Given I decline or time out, then no mandate exists and I stay on Free.

Pre-debit notification As a subscriber, I want notice before I am charged, so that I can cancel or add balance.

  • Given a debit is due, when it is 24+ hours away, then I get the notice by UPI app, push and SMS.
  • Given the notice was not sent, then the debit is not attempted.

Successful debit As a subscriber, I want confirmation, so that I know I am paid up.

  • Given the debit succeeds, then Premium extends 30 days and I get a receipt with amount and UPI reference.

Failed debit As a subscriber, I want clear next steps, so that I keep my streak.

  • Given the debit fails, then I see the reason (low balance, bank error) and a retry date.
  • Given retries are exhausted, then Premium pauses and my progress is kept.

Pause As a subscriber, I want to pause, so that I am not charged while travelling.

  • Given I pause in-app or in my UPI app, then no debit occurs until I resume.
  • Assumption: pause support varies by app; fall back to cancel-and-resubscribe if unsupported.

Cancel from the UPI app As a subscriber, I want to cancel in my UPI app, so that I am not forced into your app.

  • Given I revoke the mandate in the UPI app, when your server receives the webhook, then Premium stays until period end and no further debits are attempted.
  • Given the webhook is delayed, then a poll catches it before the next debit.

Upgrade the plan As a subscriber, I want to move to annual, so that I save money.

  • Given the new amount is within the mandate limit, then it applies at next cycle.
  • Given it exceeds the limit, then I approve a new mandate; the old one is revoked only after the new one is active.

3. Retry rules and messages (Assumption: proposed schedule)

  • Day 0 fail: "Your ₹299 payment failed: insufficient balance. We'll retry tomorrow." your input
  • Day 1 and Day 3 retries: same message with the next date.
  • Day 5 final fail: "Premium is paused. Pay ₹299 to resume with all progress saved." Include a one-tap UPI collect link. your input
  • Day 7: downgrade to Free, send a win-back message.

4. Three metrics for month one

  1. Trial-to-paid conversion (mandate active on day 8 to first successful debit).
  2. First-debit success rate, split by bank and UPI app.
  3. Involuntary churn recovered, the share of failed debits that succeed within the retry window.

Next action: ask your PA in writing whether they support a trial-start validation debit and who sends the 24-hour notice.

Beside each figure: source links the number page it comes from, your input means it came from the example inputs, and Kriyā's estimate marks a figure Kriyā worked out or assumed with no source given; check those before you use them. Your own run will differ.
