The short answer

As of June 2026, 55.49 crore users had been onboarded on UPI, according to the Ministry of Finance in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. That counts users ever onboarded, not people who paid this month. In August 2026 UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore.

The onboarded count is a ceiling: it includes everyone ever onboarded, active or not. NPCI does not publish monthly active users, so the number paying with UPI in a given month is lower by an amount nobody publishes.

How we got this number

  1. Start from the latest official count: 55.49 crore users onboarded as of June 2026, from the Minister of State for Finance's written reply to the Lok Sabha (reported 21 July 2026).
  2. Check it against use: 24.51 billion transactions in August 2026 is about 44 transactions per onboarded user that month, which is plausible for a payment method used for daily small purchases.
  3. Reject any figure for "active users" that is larger than the onboarded count or cites no NPCI release; we found such claims on statistics blogs and left them out.
  4. Report the onboarded count as the number and say plainly that active users are fewer and unpublished.

What this number does not tell you

  • One person with two UPI apps or two bank accounts may be counted more than once; the reply does not say how duplicates are handled.
  • Onboarded users include people who tried UPI once and stopped.
  • The count is not split by state, age or app.
