Open-source, Git-friendly API client; collections live as files in your repo
Bruno is the API client to switch to if Postman's cloud workspaces and seat prices have started to grate. Collections are plain text files that live next to your code and are reviewed in pull requests; nothing syncs to a vendor cloud unless you choose to. The free app covers most individual use. Pro, at $6 per user a month, adds private Git providers and unlimited workspaces for teams.

Bruno is a desktop API client for designing, running and testing HTTP, REST, GraphQL and gRPC requests. Unlike Postman or Insomnia, it does not store collections in a cloud account: each collection is a folder of .bru files written in a plain-text markup, so requests, environments and tests are versioned in Git with the service they describe. The app is open source under the MIT licence and has more than 47,000 stars on GitHub.
The company behind it sells Pro and Ultimate plans that add team features (private Git providers, Git UI, unlimited OpenAPI syncs, SSO and audit logs). The free Open Source plan is not a trial; it is the product most developers will use day to day.
Quick facts: MIT licence · Collections as .bru files in Git · HTTP, REST, GraphQL, gRPC · Free app; Pro $6 and Ultimate $11 per user a month billed annually · CLI for CI runs.
Each request is a readable .bru file; diffs show in pull requests and nothing leaves your machine.
Clone, commit and branch collections from inside the app; Pro adds private providers and the fuller Git UI.
Run a collection with assertions in CI (GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines) and fail the build on a broken endpoint.
Pre-request and post-response scripts in JavaScript, with assertions and environment variables, offline.
Generate and keep a collection in step with an OpenAPI spec; 5 syncs a month free, unlimited on Pro.
Ultimate adds the controls an enterprise security review asks for, plus AI governance.
Three plans. The free Open Source plan is fully usable for individuals and small teams; paid plans are per user, billed annually, with a 14-day Ultimate trial that needs no card.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Open Source | $0 | API client (HTTP, REST, GraphQL, gRPC), public Git providers, 2 workspaces, 5 OpenAPI syncs a month |

In the order a small team would do them.
Choose the service's repository folder as the collection location so it is committed with the code.
Keep secrets in a .env file Bruno reads at runtime, not in the committed environment file.
Status code and one body field; it turns the collection into a smoke test.
npx @usebruno/cli run --env staging on every deploy; fail the pipeline on assertion errors.
Import the spec once and re-sync when it changes; 5 syncs a month are free, which covers most teams.
