PhonePe and Google Pay at 77.8% of UPI: what it means for checkout

In one line

Two apps still carry most UPI payments, but the share going elsewhere grew by about four points in a year, so a checkout that shows only PhonePe and Google Pay is now wrong for more than a fifth of payers.

What happened

PhonePe and Google Pay handled 77.8% of UPI transactions through listed apps in September 2026, according to NPCI's app-wise data as reported by MediaNama. A month earlier the figure was 78.3%. A year earlier it was 81.9%.

PhonePe processed 10.91 billion transactions, a 45.57% share. That is 0.9 percentage points below its 46.47% a year earlier. Google Pay processed 7.71 billion, a 32.23% share, down 3.2 points from 35.43%. Google Pay lost more ground than PhonePe.

The share went to smaller apps. Paytm stayed third with 1.94 billion transactions (8.1%). Navi was fourth with 1.14 billion, up from 1.08 billion in August. super.money had 405.1 million.

One detail matters when you compare reports. These shares divide by 23.93 billion transactions made through NPCI-listed apps, not by the 24.07 billion total for all UPI. Our UPI app market share page carries the same September figures and explains the two bases.

Both leaders are still above 30%. That is the level in NPCI's market share cap for third-party apps. The cap is measured over three months, on a rolling basis, so one month's share does not show a breach. Existing apps have until 31 December 2026 to comply. An app above the cap would have to stop onboarding customers.

What it means for builders

1. Stop hard-coding two app buttons at checkout

Many Indian checkouts show PhonePe and Google Pay as big buttons and hide every other app under 'Other UPI'. In September more than a fifth of listed-app payments went through other apps, and that share grew in a year. On Android, show the UPI apps that are installed on the phone, and put the app the customer paid with last time first. A Paytm or Navi user who has to open a menu to find their app is more likely to give up.

2. Test your flows on the next four apps, not only the top two

Paytm, Navi and super.money now carry billions of payments a month between them. Each app handles intent links, return to your app and failure screens a little differently. Put the top six apps by your own volume on a test device and run a full payment, a failure and a refund on each one. Fix the screens where the customer lands back in your app with no clear status.

3. Plan for the cap date without betting on it

The cap deadline is 31 December 2026. It has been pushed back before: NPCI moved it in late 2024. If it is enforced, an app above 30% would have to stop onboarding new customers. Existing users would keep paying as before. The effect on your checkout would be slow: new UPI users would start on other apps. You do not need to rebuild anything for that date. You need payment reporting that splits success rate and volume by app, so you see the shift when it comes.

Who should act

  • Checkout and payments product managers — The app picker is the screen that decides whether a non-PhonePe, non-Google Pay user finishes paying.
  • Mobile engineers on Android apps — Showing installed UPI apps and remembering the last one used is a small change with a direct effect on completed payments.
  • Merchants with their own payment analytics — A report of success rate by UPI app shows whether the slow shift to smaller apps is costing you payments.

This week

  • Pull the last three months of UPI payments and split attempts, successes and drop-offs by app. Compare your mix with the September shares above.
  • Check what your Android checkout shows when PhonePe and Google Pay are not installed. Fix it if the customer sees an empty or confusing screen.
  • Run one full payment, one failure and one refund on Paytm, Navi and super.money, and log every broken return screen.
  • Add the 31 December 2026 cap date to your payments calendar with a note to recheck NPCI's position in early December.

Questions people ask

What was PhonePe's UPI market share in September 2026?

45.57% of transactions through NPCI-listed apps, or 10.91 billion transactions. A year earlier it was 46.47%.

Are PhonePe and Google Pay breaking NPCI's 30% cap?

Both are above 30% in a single month, but the cap is measured over three months against all UPI volume, and existing apps have until 31 December 2026 to comply. Until that date there is no breach to act on.

Why do different reports give different UPI app shares?

Some divide by transactions through listed apps (23.93 billion in September 2026) and some by all UPI transactions (24.07 billion). The second gives slightly lower shares.
