How many vehicles are registered in India each month?

History

Retail registrations on the Vahan portal, added up by the dealers' body FADA for two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and wheeled construction equipment. This counts vehicles sold to buyers and registered, not factory dispatches.

How we got this number

1. Take the "Total" row of FADA's September 2026 vehicle retail release, which is built from Vahan registrations: 25,36,920 units, against 19,24,546 in September 2025.
2. Read the six-month total from the same release: 1,55,12,319 vehicles from April to September 2026.
3. Put it next to earlier months from FADA's monthly releases: 26,92,449 in March, 26,11,317 in April, 25,31,067 in May, 25,57,234 in June, 25,91,138 in July and 24,23,201 in August 2026.

What this number does not tell you

• Vahan is a live database, so a month's count can move a little as late registrations are added. FADA publishes its release in the first week of the next month.
• FADA is a dealers' body, not the road transport ministry. Its release is the source here; we could not open the Vahan dashboard itself, so the confidence is medium.
• FADA notes that some Telangana data for three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors was not available for September 2026, so those counts are slightly low.
• The 31.82% growth is against a weak September 2025. The EV-only pages on this site count only electric vehicles.
