Google Search Console

Google's free report on how your site appears in Search: queries, clicks, indexing and speed

Marketing & SEO Free with a Google account Updated 22 Oct 2026 🇮🇳 Verified Review for Indian Startups
✅ Required for any site that wants Google traffic

Quick Verdict

Search Console is not optional: it is the only place Google tells you which queries show your pages, which pages it refuses to index and why, and whether your pages pass Core Web Vitals. It costs nothing and takes ten minutes to verify. The mistake most teams make is adding several overlapping properties and summing them; use one domain property and read it weekly.

What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is Google's free service for site owners. After you prove you control a domain, it shows the Search performance report (queries, pages, countries, devices, with impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position), the Page indexing report (which URLs are in Google's index and which are excluded, with the reason), URL Inspection for a single page, Core Web Vitals from real users, sitemap submission, manual-action and security warnings, and tools for removals and change of address.

For a product team it answers three questions a week: which pages are losing or gaining clicks, which new pages Google has not indexed, and whether a release made pages slower. It is also the data source behind most SEO tools' 'Google data' features, including the numbers on this site.

Quick facts: Free · Domain or URL-prefix properties · 16 months of query data · Daily data with a 2 to 3 day lag · API for bulk export · Links to Google Analytics and Looker Studio.

Key Features of Google Search Console

Search performance

Impressions, clicks, CTR and position by query, page, country, device and search appearance, filterable and comparable over 16 months.

Page indexing

Every URL Google knows about, indexed or not, with the reason (noindex, duplicate, crawled but not indexed, redirect).

URL Inspection

Index status, last crawl, canonical chosen by Google, and a live test of the current page.

Core Web Vitals

LCP, INP and CLS from real Chrome users, grouped by URL pattern, mobile and desktop.

Sitemaps and removals

Submit sitemaps and see how many URLs were read; request temporary removal of a URL.

Manual actions and security issues

Email alerts when Google applies a penalty or finds malware or hacked content.

Pricing and Indian Market Context

There is no price. Google Search Console is free for any number of sites and users with a Google account.

For teams in India: Verify one domain property (sc-domain:yoursite.in) and stop. Adding https://yoursite.in/ and section-level properties as well makes exports double or triple count the same clicks; we learnt this the hard way on this site.

Who Should Use Google Search Console?

  • Every website owner — If Google traffic matters at all, this is the only first-party source of query and indexing data.
  • Product teams shipping new pages — The indexing report shows within days whether a new section is being picked up or ignored.
  • Engineers watching page speed — Core Web Vitals from real users, not a lab run, grouped by template.
  • Not ideal for: Keyword research for pages you do not have yet — It only shows queries your site already appears for; use Ahrefs, Semrush or Ubersuggest for the rest.
  • Not ideal for: Competitor analysis — You see only your own properties.

First 5 Things to Set Up in Google Search Console

In the order a small team would do them.

  1. 1

Verify a domain property through DNS

Add the TXT record Google gives you at your registrar. One domain property covers http, https, www and every subdomain.

  2. 2

    Submit your sitemap

Add sitemap.xml (and a news sitemap if you publish daily) under Sitemaps; check the 'discovered pages' count a week later.

  3. 3

Turn on email alerts and add a second owner

So a manual action or indexing drop reaches a human even if the founder's inbox is full.

  4. 4

    Read Page indexing before Performance

'Crawled, currently not indexed' and 'Duplicate without user-selected canonical' are where new sites lose traffic silently.

  5. 5

    Export weekly by page

Use the API or a connector (Looker Studio, Windsor) to pull clicks and impressions per page into a sheet, from one property only.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Free, with the only first-party Google query data
  • Indexing reasons per URL
  • Real-user Core Web Vitals
  • API for exports and automation
  • Alerts for penalties and security issues

Cons

  • Data lags two to three days
  • Query data is sampled and filtered for privacy; totals never add up exactly
  • 16-month history only; export if you need more
  • Easy to double count with overlapping properties

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Search Console free?
Yes. There is no paid version; any Google account can verify and manage sites at no cost (checked 22 Oct 2026).
How far back does Search Console data go?
The Performance report keeps 16 months of data. Export monthly if you want a longer history.
Why do Search Console clicks not match Google Analytics?
Search Console counts clicks on Google results; Analytics counts sessions that loaded your tracking script. Ad blockers, prerendering and privacy filtering make the two differ by 10 to 40 percent. Trust Search Console for search traffic trends.
