How we got this number

  1. Start with the latest overdue share for credit cards that names its period: TransUnion CIBIL's white paper, reported by PTI on 8 July 2026, gives 1.7% for the year to March 2026 and 2% a year earlier.
  2. Keep the definition beside the number: the headline is one overdue bucket (91 to 179 days), not a 90+ days-past-due rate and not a bank NPA ratio.
  3. Do not average it with, or compare it directly to, a figure that uses another definition.

What this number does not tell you

  • The 1.7% is the share of card outstandings unpaid for 91 to 179 days. It is a share of balances, not of accounts, and it leaves out other overdue buckets.
  • We could not open the CIBIL white paper itself; the figure is as reported by PTI and as shown on TransUnion CIBIL's own newsroom.
  • The only 90+ days-past-due card rate we found with a printed period is TransUnion CIBIL's 1.70% for Q1 2018. It is old and is shown for context only, not as a current rate.
  • Delinquency is also measured by value or by accounts, and by bank, fintech or card type. A single national rate hides those differences.

Questions people ask

Is the credit card delinquency rate in India going up or down?

On the CIBIL measure it fell: 1.7% of card outstandings were unpaid for 91 to 179 days in the year to March 2026, from 2% in the year-ago period.

Why do credit card delinquency figures differ so much?

They count different things. CIBIL's 1.7% is a share of card balances in one overdue bucket, 91 to 179 days. Other sources use gross NPA ratios, accounts instead of balances, or a 90+ days definition, so the definition changes the number.

What was the 90+ days past due credit card rate in the past?

TransUnion CIBIL printed a credit card 90+ DPD balance delinquency rate of 1.70% for Q1 2018, in a release dated 27 June 2018. We found no later 90+ figure with a printed period.
