How we got this number

1. Take the September 2026 row of NPCI's monthly IMPS table: 354.09 million transactions and 705912.08 crore rupees in value.
2. Cross-check against the RBI's Payment System Indicators for August 2026, which carry the NPCI numbers in lakh: 3599.42 lakh in August 2026, 3599.42 divided by 10 gives 359.94 million, the same as NPCI's table.
3. Read earlier months from the same NPCI table (December 2025 to August 2026) and put them in time order.

What this number does not tell you

• NPCI's own statistics page could not be opened (it returned an error), so the figures are read from Dataful's copy of NPCI's table. The source name says so. A news report on 1 October 2026 gives the same September figures (354Mn and Rs7.06 lakh crore).
• Dataful's two IMPS tables differ in the second decimal for some months (August is 359.94 in one and 359.95 in the other). The September row comes from the table that already has September; earlier months come from the other one.
• IMPS here means all IMPS transactions that NPCI counts, including transfers sent through mobile banking apps. Money sent over UPI is counted separately.

Not year on year. The RBI's table shows August 2026 volume 24.6% below August 2025, while the value of IMPS payments was 17.8% higher.

What is the difference between IMPS and UPI?

Both move money between bank accounts. NPCI reports them as separate systems with separate monthly counts; see the UPI page for the UPI numbers.
