How we got this number

  1. Read the latest reading from the RBI's press release 'RBI - Digital Payments Index for September 2025', released on 12 February 2026: 516.76, against 493.22 for March 2025.
  2. Read the earlier readings from the RBI's releases for March 2025 (493.22 and 465.33 for September 2024) and March 2024 (445.50 and 418.77 for September 2023).
  3. Work out the rise as 516.76 less 493.22, which is 23.54 points, or 4.8% of 493.22. Compare with September 2024 (465.33) for the 11.1% rise over a year.

What this number does not tell you

  • The RBI releases each reading about four to five months after the reference month, so the latest reading is always old. I could not find a March 2026 reading on the RBI's site on 28 October 2026; check the RBI's press releases for a newer one.
  • The index is a score, not a count of payments. A rise means digital payments are used more widely, but it does not say by how many transactions.
  • The index is built by the RBI from several parameters. It is not comparable to a payments count from the NPCI.
