A folio is an account an investor holds with a fund house. The count adds every folio in every scheme, so one person with several schemes holds several folios. It is not a count of investors.

How we got this number

  1. Take the 'Total' line of AMFI's monthly folio count table for September 2026: 28,62,31,680 folios, against 28,35,19,085 in August.
  2. Cross-check with AMFI's scheme-wise industry data as on September 30, 2026, whose Grand Total row shows the same 28,62,31,680 folios across 1,995 schemes.
  3. Put it next to the earlier months in the same table: 27,53,11,360 in April, 27,65,67,797 in May, 27,85,99,182 in June and 28,08,65,000 in July 2026.

What this number does not tell you

  • A folio is not a person. One investor can hold many folios, so 28.62 crore folios does not mean 28.62 crore investors.
  • Equity funds hold 19,09,90,944 of the folios, which is 66.7% of the total; the rest sit in debt, hybrid, index fund, ETF and other schemes.
  • The monthly note is AMFI's, prepared with Crisil Intelligence; the same total appears in AMFI's own scheme-wise data file.
