How we got this number

  1. Take the overall Unemployment Rate (UR) for persons aged 15 years and above, current weekly status, from MoSPI's PLFS monthly press note for September 2026: 5.0%.
  2. Read the rural, urban, male and female rates from the same note: rural 4.2%, urban 6.9%, male 4.9%, female 5.2%.
  3. Put it next to earlier months from the PLFS monthly bulletin's table for rural and urban India combined: 5.2% in April, 5.5% in May, 5.5% in June, 5.1% in July and 5.0% in August 2026.

What this number does not tell you

  • The monthly PLFS rate uses 'current weekly status': a person counts as unemployed if they did not work even for 1 hour in the 7 days before the survey but sought or were available for work. It is not the same as the annual 'usual status' rate.
  • MoSPI's monthly estimates come from a sample, so a change of a tenth of a percentage point from one month to the next is within normal variation.
  • Monthly PLFS estimates started in 2025 on a revised survey design, so older annual PLFS figures are not directly comparable.
