The numbers this prompt uses

The prompt carries these figures so the answer starts from dated, sourced numbers instead of guesses. Each page shows the source, the month and the history.

Sample answer

Sample answer from Kriyā, 26 October 2026, for the example inputs above. Kept as it came back; links added beside each figure.

1. Who already invests, and why accounts are not people

  • 240.59 million demat accounts at end-Sep 2026 (CDSL + NSDL) [5]. These are accounts, not unique investors: one person often holds several (Zerodha + Groww + a bank demat), and many are dormant.
  • ₹32,490 crore came in through SIPs in Sep 2026, a record month (AMFI, per your figures list). MF AUM was ₹82.64 lakh crore at end-Sep 2026 (AMFI, per your list). Note [6] shows ₹72T+ for Mar 2026, an older reading, so use the Sep figure.
  • Unique SIP investors: Assumption: not in your list, so I won't give a number. Use AMFI's SIP account count and divide by 1.5-2 SIPs per person to estimate people.

2. How many fit our user

Funnel, each filter stated:

  1. Unique demat holders: Assumption: ~40-45% of 240.59M [5], i.e. ~100M people (multi-account correction).
  2. Age 22-30: Assumption: ~25% of investors, so ~25M. Kriyā's estimate
  3. Salaried, tier 1 and 2 cities: Assumption: ~40%, so ~10M. Kriyā's estimate
  4. Actually SIP-ready (earning, banked, willing to start): Assumption: 50%, so ~5M serviceable users. Kriyā's estimate

Also count first-timers not yet in demat: SIP via direct plans needs only KYC and folio, no demat. UPI has 55.49 crore users onboarded (Jun 2026, per your list), so payments reach is not the constraint. Conversion to investing is. source

3. Revenue per user per year and market in rupees

  • Advice subscription: ₹99 × 12 = ₹1,188. Kriyā's estimate
  • Direct plans: zero commission by design, so no trail income.
  • Assumption: only 20-30% of users pay for advice, so blended ~₹240-360 per user per year. Kriyā's estimate
  • Serviceable market (5M users): paying ~₹1,188 → ~₹5,940 crore at full penetration. At 25% paid, ~₹1,500 crore a year. Realistic early share of 2-3% is ₹30-45 crore. Kriyā's estimate

4. Whose share we take

  • Brokers (Groww, Zerodha, Upstox): they treat MFs as a feeder to trading. Goal-based planning is weak there, and they won't build paid advice because of SEBI conflicts.
  • AMCs: they gain distribution without paying a distributor. They tolerate us because direct plans cost them less.
  • Banks: they push regular plans with commission to salaried customers. We win young earners who distrust that.
  • Why they let us: we are small, targeting first-timers they convert poorly.

5. SEBI limits

  • Paid advice means registering as a SEBI Investment Adviser (IA) (2013 Regulations), with qualification, net-worth and fee-cap rules. I'm not certain of current fee-cap figures; verify them.
  • Advice and distribution must be segregated: an IA cannot take commissions on the same client, so direct plans only is the right call.
  • Risk profiling, suitability records and disclosures are mandatory.
  • Marketing returns promises is restricted.

6. The monthly number to track

Monthly SIP inflows (AMFI): ₹32,490 crore in Sep 2026. Sustained growth signals more first-time SIP starts. Pair it with new unique SIP registrations, since inflow rises from ticket size too. source

Next action: Pull AMFI's latest monthly SIP account and new-registration data to replace my assumptions in section 2.

Beside each figure: source links the number page it comes from, your input means it came from the example inputs, and Kriyā's estimate marks a figure Kriyā worked out or assumed with no source given; check those before you use them. Your own run will differ.
